Meet the Founder
I’m Erin Schaum, a Registered Nurse and Legal Nurse Consultant based in Indiana. Long before I entered the medical field, I planned to become an attorney and I even spent time working with a local prosecutor’s office. Ultimately, my path shifted toward healthcare, where I spent more than a decade caring for and advocating for patients in high-acuity environments, including the Emergency Department and the Critical Care Unit. Those years shaped the way I approach complex problems: with compassion, precision, and disciplined critical thinking. Over time, I realized the bedside wasn’t the final chapter of my career. Legal Nurse Consulting gave me the opportunity to bring together two fields I have always been drawn to: medicine and the law.
Today, I work with attorneys to cut through medical complexity, identify what others may overlook, and translate clinical information into clear, actionable insights that support legal strategy. I founded Aperture Legal Nurse Consulting to help bridge the gap between medical facts and legal analysis. My goal is to give attorneys a clinical partner who can uncover the true story within the medical record.
At the center of every case is a real person, and I never lose sight of that. Aperture Legal Nurse Consulting is more than a consulting business, its the product of a career built on compassion, a brain wired for critical thinking, and a commitment to pursing the truth within the medical record.
Why Work With Aperture Legal Nurse Consulting?

- Integrity-Driven Work– I approach every case with respect for the real people behind the records. I value thoughtful collaboration with attorneys who are committed to understanding the medicine, evaluating the facts honestly, and pursing cases that truly warrant legal action.
- Real clinical experience– More than a decade of bedside nursing experience brings not just credentials, but the clinical judgment that comes from years of hands-on patient care in high-acuity settings.
- Next-level attention to detail– I don’t skim and summarize. I analyze, question, and uncover what others may miss, including omissions, inconsistencies and subtle documentation issues that can make or break a case.
- Critical thinking beyond AI– AI can organize records, but it can’t think clinically. It doesn’t ask the right medical questions, detect what’s missing, or identify red flags. I review and validate AI-generated reports to ensure they’re accurate, complete, and legally reliable.
- Cost-effective clarity– I help attorneys quickly identify weak claims and highlight the strongest aspects of your case- saving time, reducing risk, and protecting your bottom line.
- No fluff, just truth– My evaluations are honest, case-specific and grounded in clinical reality. My goal is to not to provide a generic summary, but a strategic tool you can rely on when making legal decisions.
- Attorney-focused communication– Everything I produce is designed with litigation in mind- clear, concise analysis that can be used in demand letters, depositions, and courtroom strategy.
- Access to a trusted provider network– When a case requires additional expertise, I connect you with a vetted network of experienced medical professionals across specialties who are available for review, consultation, or expert testimony.
